The first inaugural “Break the Silence” Gala took place on November 16, 2013 hosted by Jillian Loyden, professional soccer player and member of the U.S. Women’s National Team and SkyBlue FC. This star-studded “purple” carpet event provided an opportunity for its participants to help “Break the Silence” and empower people to help victims of domestic violence. Jillian Loyden’s family is motivated to bring awareness because her sister, Britton Loyden, lost her life in February of 2012 as a victim of domestic violence. In addition to honoring Britton and raising awareness the Gala raised funds for programs of the Joyful Heart Foundation and the Jillian Loyden Foundation. The Jillian Loyden Foundation’s mission is to provide aid and resources for children that have faced unfavorable circumstances. The Joyful Heart Foundation was established by Mariska Hargitay, and works to foster a community that turns toward the issues of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse.
